Wedding Traditions from Amazing Alterations: The Bouquet

Western Wedding Traditions and How Amazing Alterations in Minneapolis Can Play a Role in Your Wedding

The bridal bouquet is not just a beautiful accessory for the big day; it also has a role in tradition. In modern tradition, the bride throws the bouquet to the unmarried women attending the wedding. The woman to catch the bouquet will supposedly be the next to be married. (Injuries are hopefully avoided in the process.) In some weddings, the man who caught the garter will place his prize on the leg of the woman who caught the bouquet, and the two will share a dance. However, some couples choose to instead honor the couple who has been married the longest by presenting them with the bouquet.

Like the garter toss, the bouquet toss originates from the Middle Ages when it was seen as a good omen to obtain a piece of the bride’s clothing or flowers. Rather than allow the guests to tear apart her dress, the bride would throw the bouquet and make her escape.

Today it is common to use synthetic flowers to keep your bouquet looking fresh for years to come. We have also had brides show us bouquets made entirely out of antique broaches and glamorous gems. If you plan on creating a memorable and lasting piece for your bouquet, Amazing Alterations can help you customize it with ribbons, rhinestones, or pieces inherited from your mother’s or grandmother’s wedding.
